Fishing Whitsundays & Airlie Beach

Fisheries management across the Whitsundays strictly enforces Queensland DAF regulations, including the annual East Coast Barramundi closure from 1 November to 1 February. Personal possession limits permit 5 Barramundi (minimum length 58cm, maximum 120cm) outside closure dates, with Great Barrier Reef Coral Reef Fin Fish closure dates enforced around October and November full moons. Note that Lake Proserpine (Peter Faust Dam) is a SIPS impoundment where Barramundi can be legally targeted year-round! Anglers must observe mandatory Crocodile Safety guidelines across all tidal estuaries and mainland boat ramps.

Land-based anglers enjoy world-class infrastructure along the Coral Sea Marina boardwalk, Shute Harbour jetty, Bowen foreshore, and Airlie Beach lagoon walls. Casting 30g to 50g topwater stickbaits or metal lures off Shute Harbour jetty during flood tides yields fast action on Queenfish, Giant Trevally, and Spanish Mackerel. The sheltered timber platforms along Coral Sea Marina produce steady catches of Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jack, and Southern Calamari on light tackle.

Boating fishers launching from Abell Point Marina (Coral Sea Marina), Shute Harbour, or Proserpine River cover deep harbour channels, island passages, and outer Coral Sea reefs. Drifting the shallow coral gardens around Hamilton Island and Hayman Island in 10 to 25 metres depth accounts for heavy catches of Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Spangled Emperor, and Spanish Mackerel. Trolling deep minnow lures around rock bars in the Proserpine River yields trophy Barramundi and King Threadfin.

Landbased

  • SHUTE HARBOUR JETTY: Iconic public timber fishing pier near Airlie Beach, offering exceptional land-based casting for Queenfish, Giant Trevally, and Spanish Mackerel. Cast 40g to 60g metal casting spoons or topwater poppers into deep water channels on an incoming tide. Stand clear of the edge and maintain crocodile awareness along foreshore steps.
  • CORAL SEA MARINA BOARDWALK: Public timber boardwalk in Airlie Beach, providing comfortable casting for Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jack, and Squid. Cast fine monofilament lines with running sinker rigs baited with fresh prawns or live herring near pylon bases at flood tide. Stand back from the edge at all times.
  • BOWEN FORESHORE ROCKS: Public rock wall and jetty on the Bowen foreshore, offering productive land-based access for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, and Trevally. Work 10cm floating hardbody minnows or soft plastic paddletails under pylon shadows at turning tides. Do not wade in the water under any circumstances.
  • PROSERPINE RIVER BRIDGE FORESHORE: High concrete bridge crossing south of Proserpine, famous for Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, and Mud Crabs. Fan-cast soft plastic minnows or live mullet along muddy channel drop-offs during early morning low-wind windows. Maintain high alertness for large saltwater crocodiles resting on mudbanks.
  • HAYMAN ISLAND VIEW BEACH: Scenic golden sand beach facing Hayman Island, offering fantastic surf casting for Yellowfin Whiting, Tailor, and Trevally. Cast 12-foot surf rods with 3-way patternoster rigs baited with fresh pilchard blocks cast beyond the inner reef break. Always check swell heights before fishing near rocks.

Offshore

  • HAMILTON ISLAND CORAL GARDENS: Submerged coral reef network surrounding Hamilton Island sitting 12 nautical miles off Airlie Beach in 10 to 28 metres depth. Premier bottom bouncing and jigging territory for trophy Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Spangled Emperor, and Golden Snapper. Anchor upwind and establish a continuous berley trail.
  • PROSERPINE RIVER TIDAL CHANNELS: Navigable 40km tidal river channel holding world-famous Barramundi, King Threadfin, and Mud Crabs. Slow-troll deep-diving minnow lures or drift live mullet along muddy channel drop-offs during turning tides. Heavy 4m tides generate strong current flows.
  • HAYMAN ISLAND REEF BOMMIES: High-energy coral reef structure sitting north of Airlie Beach in 12 to 25 metres depth. Vertical jigging 120g metal knife jigs or trolling minnow lures triggers aggressive strikes from Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, and Giant Trevally. Early morning calm weather offers optimal conditions.
  • OUTER BARRIER REEF MARLIN DROP-OFF: Continental shelf drop-off sitting 25 nautical miles east of Airlie Beach dropping from 50 to 500 metres depth. World-famous heavy-tackle game fishing zone for trolling skirted lures for Sailfish, Black Marlin, and Yellowfin Tuna. Requires a large ocean-going vessel.
  • SHUTE HARBOUR DEEP PASSAGE: Deep ocean passage connecting Shute Harbour to Whitsunday Passage, holding Golden Snapper, Black Jewfish, and Fingermark. Trolling deep-diving minnow lures or drifting live prawns along channel drop-offs produces consistent quality catches.

Hot Spots

  • GREAT BARRIER REEF: World-famous coral reef system delivering bucket-list Coral Trout, Red Emperor, and Mackerel.
  • PROSERPINE RIVER DELTA: Iconic mangrove river system famous for trophy Barramundi, King Threadfin, and Mud Crabs.
  • SHUTE HARBOUR JETTY: High-action ocean platform holding Queenfish, Giant Trevally, and Spanish Mackerel.
  • HAMILTON ISLAND REEFS: Prolific island reef network holding Coral Trout, Red Emperor, and Spangled Emperor.
  • CORAL SEA MARINA: Premier Airlie Beach harbour providing safe deep-water ocean launch access and fish cleaning.

Local Bait Tips

  • CAST-NETTED MULLET & HERRING: Harvested using a heavy 10-foot cast net thrown over visible bait schools in Proserpine River and Airlie Beach foreshore. Collect live mullet and herring into an aerated livewell. Rigged on snelled wire hooks, live mullet trigger explosive strikes from Barramundi, Spanish Mackerel, and Queenfish.
  • LIVE PRAWNS & CHERABINS: Caught in cast nets or opera-house traps baited with meat frames in upper Proserpine and O'Connell river creeks. Store live in aerated freshwater containers. Unbeatable live bait for targeting trophy Barramundi and Mangrove Jack around river snags.
  • SHORE CRABS (SALLY CRABS): Collected by hand from rock crevices and granite boulders along Coral Sea Marina breakwalls at low tide. Target small shore crabs, place them in a damp bucket with wet seaweed, and keep shaded. Rigged through the outer carapace, they represent lethal live bait for Golden Snapper.
  • MUD CRABS: Caught in heavy wire crab traps baited with fresh fish frames set along mangrove roots in Proserpine River and Shute Harbour creeks. Store live in cool damp burlap bags. Fresh crab claws represent unbeatable bait for large Golden Snapper and Mangrove Jack.
