Fishing Bronte System & Central Lagoons
The interconnected lagoons feature shallow weed meadows, flooded marsh margins, and gravel channels fed by alpine rivers. Note that Bronte Lagoon is strictly managed as an Artificials Only (Lure and Fly) water where bait fishing is prohibited, while Penstock Lagoon and Little Pine Lagoon are strictly Fly Fishing Only sanctuaries where spinning reels and lures are illegal. Anglers must check local lagoon rules as gear restrictions and vessel speed limits vary across individual waterbodies.
Land-based fishers can work accessible shorelines around Bronte Park, Penstock wall, and Little Pine river canal entries. Casting dry fly patterns or nymph rigs into shallow weed gaps yields fast action on wild Brown Trout. Walking the grassy lagoon edges during summer afternoons allows anglers to sight-cast directly to fish sipping insects off the surface.
Boaters and kayak fishers navigate shallow weed beds and narrow channels using electric trolling motors or oars to avoid disturbing feeding fish. Drifting across shallow weed pockets casting wet fly patterns is highly effective during overcast weather. Strict oar and electric-only low-speed boating rules apply on Penstock and Little Pine to preserve the quiet fly-fishing environment.
Landbased
- BRONTE LAGOON TAILRACE BANK: Canal inflow area where water flushes into Bronte Lagoon, creating a high-nutrient feeding zone. Cast small 50mm minnow lures or wet flies into the current seam for wild Brown Trout. Early morning light windows yield active feeding rises as trout target moving bait.

- LITTLE PINE CANAL MOUTH: High-country river entry where cold water enters Little Pine Lagoon. Cast unweighted wet flies or dry patterns into clear current gaps for wild Brown Trout. Note that Little Pine Lagoon is strictly a fly-fishing only water.
- WOODWARDS BAYS FORESHORE: Sheltered bay on Bronte Lagoon flanked by tea-tree bushes and clear sand pockets. Walk the bank during sunny afternoon hours casting soft plastics or wet flies for cruising trout. High water levels bring feeding fish right up into flooded shore grass.
- RED HUT POINT BANK: Grassy point on Little Pine Lagoon offering clear fly-casting access across shallow weed flats. Cast dry flies or nymph rigs into wind-waves during afternoon Mayfly hatches. Sturdy wading boots and thermal clothing are recommended for wading cold marsh edges.
Offshore
- BRONTE LAGOON MAIN BASIN: Shallow open water basin holding patchy ribbon weed in 3 to 6 meters depth. Drift across clear weed gaps casting small shallow-diving hardbodies or soft plastics for wild Brown Trout. Maintaining a slow drift with a sea anchor ensures natural lure presentation.
- PENSTOCK LAGOON WEED FLATS: Extensive shallow weed meadow sitting in 1.5 to 3 meters of clear water. Drift slowly using oars or an electric trolling motor casting Woolly Buggers or dry flies for trophy Brown Trout. Strict low-speed electric motor and fly-fishing-only rules apply across the entire lagoon.
- LITTLE PINE SHALLOWS: World-famous shallow lagoon averaging 1 to 2 meters depth packed with aquatic weed beds. Drift-cast dry flies or unweighted wet flies ahead of the boat during summer Mayfly hatches for rising trout. Extreme stealth and quiet rowing are necessary, as spinning and lures are prohibited.
- BRONTE CANAL CHANNEL: Submerged channel bed connecting Bronte Lagoon to upstream water feeds in 4 to 7 meters depth. Slow-troll small minnow lures at 2.5km/h along the channel drop-off for Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. Keep your lure swimming just above the bottom weed growth.
- TAILEND BAYS MARGINS: Sheltered backwater bays on Bronte Lagoon holding flooded timber stumps and thick weed pockets. Cast small soft plastics along timber bases for territorial Brown Trout. Once you locate feeding fish, drop anchor and fish quietly.

Local Bait Tips
- ARTIFICIAL LURE SELECTION: Note that Bronte Lagoon, Penstock Lagoon, and Little Pine Lagoon are strictly designated Artificials / Fly Only waters under IFS rules; bait fishing of any kind is prohibited across the entire system. Small 50mm shallow-diving minnows and soft plastics in natural trout patterns work exceptionally well in Bronte Lagoon.
- FLY PATTERNS: Cast Woolly Buggers, Fur Flies, and Red-spotted Nymphs along shallow weed margins in Penstock and Little Pine. During summer afternoons, twitch foam beetle and Mayfly dry patterns over rising trout during hatches.
- SPINNER & BLADE SELECTION: Cast 5g to 8g inline metal spinners or small metal blades along Bronte Lagoon canal drop-offs. Retrieve slowly just above submerged weed beds to trigger aggressive territorial strikes from wild Brown Trout.

The facility features a concrete launching ramp slab providing access to the main lagoon basin, flooded timber coves, and canal channels. Amenities include gravel car-trailer parking and public restrooms.
- Penstock Lagoon Boat Ramp:
Penstock Lagoon Boat Ramp is located off Penstock Road at Penstock Lagoon. The facility consists of a gravel and concrete slab launch designed for light fly-fishing craft accessing the shallow weed flats. Vessels are subject to strict low-speed electric motor and oar-only regulations; amenities include unpaved trailer parking and public information boards.
- Little Pine Lagoon Ramp:
Little Pine Lagoon Ramp is located off Marlborough Road along the western shoreline of Little Pine Lagoon. The facility features an unpaved gravel launch ramp suitable for light aluminum boats, rowboats, and kayaks accessing the world-famous shallow fly-fishing lagoon. Subject to strict low-speed motor restrictions; amenities include unpaved parking and angler signage.
