Fishing Glenelg & Metro Beaches
The marine ecosystem features wide sand flats, ribbon weed meadows, and artificial tyre reefs that hold rich marine life. Summer and autumn bring an influx of Blue Swimmer Crabs, Yellowfin Whiting, Sand Flathead, and Silver Trevally along the metro coast. Closures in Gulf St Vincent: southern calamari and southern garfish have been closed since 1 May 2026. You can't target, take or keep them, and PIRSA has not given an end date. Snapper are closed until 30 June 2027. That means no targeting and no catch and release. If you hook one by accident, release it straight away. Check the SA Fishing app before you go.
Land-based fishers can work Glenelg Jetty, Grange Jetty, Henley Jetty, and West Beach breakwalls. Dropping light patternoster rigs baited with peeled prawns beside pylon structures pulls Tommy Ruff, Silver Trevally, and Yellowfin Whiting. Setting up surf rod stands on metropolitan beaches using cockles or fresh squid strips yields Sand Flathead in the outer wave troughs.
Boaters launching from West Beach Boat Ramp or O'Sullivan Beach Ramp enjoy multi-lane concrete facilities accessing open gulf waters. Trolling shallow-diving minnow lures around Marino Rocks targets Australian Salmon, Snook, and Silver Trevally. Drifting the shallow sand gaps across the metro holding reefs yields limit bags of Sand Flathead and Blue Swimmer Crabs.
Quick limits for Gulf St Vincent and the Port River (PIRSA, checked 20 Oct 2026): mulloway 82 cm, 2 per person; flathead 30 cm, 5; King George whiting 32 cm, 5 (closed 1 March to 30 June); blue swimmer crab 11 cm, 20; Australian herring (tommy ruff) 40; salmon 21 to 35 cm, 20, or 10 if over 35 cm. Local Bait Tips
- GHOST SHRIMP (PINK NIPPERS): Pumped using a stainless steel yabbie pump on exposed low-tide sandflats near West Beach. Keep alive on damp sea-sponge in a cool shade box as top bait for Yellowfin Whiting and Sand Flathead.
- COCKLES (PIPIS): Gathered along sandy intertidal wash zones on ocean beaches at low tide by foot-twisting in wet sand. Thread two whole cockles onto long-shank hooks for Yellowfin Whiting and Sand Flathead. Use shellfish as bait only. The SA Government says don't eat shellfish you collect yourself (algal bloom health advice).
- BLUE MUSSELS: Hand-scraped from sub-surface rocks around West Beach breakwall below the low-tide mark. Thread soft mussel meat onto fine wire hooks for Silver Trevally and Tommy Ruff.

West Beach Boat Ramp (also known as the Adelaide Shores Launch) is located off Barcoo Road in West Beach, managed by the City of Charles Sturt. The high-use regional facility features 4 concrete launching lanes equipped with floating boarding pontoons protected by a rock breakwater basin, providing all-tide vessel launching into central Gulf St Vincent. Amenities include a large paved carpark, public restrooms, fish cleaning station, lighting, and wash-down area.
