Fishing Kingscote
The marine ecosystem features shallow sand spits, dense seagrass meadows, and tidal island channels that attract rich marine life. Summer and autumn deliver fast-paced fishing for King George Whiting, Southern Calamari, Sand Flathead, Silver Trevally, and Garfish across Nepean Bay. Note that Southern Calamari can be targeted year-round in Kangaroo Island waters, while Snapper is subject to a seasonal spawning closure from midday November 1 to midday December 15.
Land-based fishers can work the historic Kingscote Jetty, Emu Bay jetty, and sandy foreshore beaches. Casting size 3.0 or 3.5 squid jigs off the Kingscote Jetty pylons during high tide yields top-quality Southern Calamari. Soaking fresh cockles or ghost shrimp on light running sinker rigs from the jetty end pulls limit bags of King George Whiting and Silver Trevally.
Boaters launching from Bay of Shoals Boat Ramp or Emu Bay Boat Ramp enjoy direct access to Nepean Bay and open northern ocean waters. Trolling shallow-diving minnow lures around Beatrice Spit targets Australian Salmon, Snook, and King George Whiting. Heading out to the 15 to 30-meter deep marks off Cape Cassini produces outstanding Sand Flathead, Samson Fish, and Gummy Sharks.

- GHOST SHRIMP (PINK NIPPERS): Pumped using a stainless steel yabbie pump on exposed low-tide sandflats inside Nepean Bay. Keep alive on damp sea-sponge in a cool shade box as top bait for King George Whiting.
- SOUTHERN CALAMARI: Caught off Kingscote Jetty or over Bay of Shoals weed beds using size 3.0 squid jigs. Slice fresh tubes into thin fluttering strips for Flathead bait or use whole heads for offshore Gummy Sharks.
- COCKLES (PIPIS): Hand-gathered along sandy intertidal wash zones on ocean beaches at low tide by foot-twisting in wet sand. Thread two whole cockles onto long-shank hooks for King George Whiting and Sand Flathead.
- BLUE MUSSELS: Hand-scraped from sub-surface wharf pylons around Kingscote harbour below the low-tide mark. Thread soft mussel meat onto fine wire hooks for Silver Trevally and Tommy Ruff.

Bay of Shoals Boat Ramp (officially serving Kingscote) is located off Cordes Road at Bay of Shoals, managed by the Kangaroo Island Council and Marine and Safety SA. The high-capacity regional facility features dual concrete launching lanes equipped with a floating boarding pontoon, offering protected all-tide vessel launching into Nepean Bay and handling larger boats. Amenities include a large paved car-trailer carpark, public restrooms, fish cleaning table, lighting, and wash-down area.
- Emu Bay Boat Ramp:
Emu Bay Boat Ramp is located on Bates Road at Emu Bay on the northern shore of Kangaroo Island, managed by Kangaroo Island Council. The coastal facility features dual concrete launching lanes (4m and 8m wide side-by-side) equipped with landing jetties protected by a breakwater. Note that the launch remains exposed to strong northerly winds and swells, making it a fair-weather-only facility; amenities include paved trailer parking and public restrooms.
