Fishing Port Albert

Fishing success in Port Albert is heavily influenced by seasonal changes, tidal movements, and wind conditions. The warmer months are ideal for targeting species like King George Whiting and snapper inshore, while the cooler months see an increase in gummy shark activity. Tides play a crucial role in estuary fishing, with high tide often bringing fish into the shallows. Westerly winds can make offshore conditions challenging.

The land surrounding Port Albert features a mix of farmland, coastal scrub, and sandy beaches. The terrain is generally flat, making access to land-based fishing spots relatively easy. The coastline offers numerous vantage points for casting into the channels and inlets.

Boat access in Port Albert is excellent, with a well-maintained boat ramp providing access to Corner Inlet and the open waters of Bass Strait. From here, anglers can explore the inshore waters for whiting and flathead, or venture offshore in search of snapper, gummy shark, and other pelagic species. Kayaks and small boats are also suitable for exploring the sheltered waterways closer to town.

Landbased

  • Port Albert Pier: Fish from the pier for a variety of species including King George Whiting, flathead, and silver trevally. Best fished during high tide.
  • McLoughlins Beach: Located a short drive from Port Albert, McLoughlins Beach offers excellent surf fishing for Australian salmon and gummy shark.
  • Ninety Mile Beach (eastern end): Fish the gutters along Ninety Mile Beach for salmon and tailor. Look for deeper channels close to shore.
  • Corner Inlet: Land-based fishing along the shores of Corner Inlet can produce whiting, flathead, and gummy shark. Focus on areas with weed beds and sandy bottoms.
  • Old Port Road Jetty: A smaller jetty that provides access to good fishing for flathead and whiting. Ideal for families.

Offshore

  • Snapper Banks: Located offshore from Port Albert, these banks hold good populations of snapper, particularly during the warmer months. Use berley to attract fish.
  • Gummy Shark Grounds: Venture further offshore to target gummy shark. Use fresh bait and a strong trace.
  • King George Whiting Locations: Look for whiting in the sandy areas of Corner Inlet. Drifting with baited rigs is an effective technique.
  • The Entrance to Corner Inlet: Fish near the entrance to Corner Inlet for a variety of species including snapper, gummy shark, and King George Whiting. Be mindful of strong currents.
  • Deeper Reefs: Explore the deeper reefs offshore for species such as morwong and flathead. Use a depth sounder to locate promising structure.

Local Bait Tips

  • Yabbies: Pump at low tide in the mudflats around Corner Inlet.
  • Prawns: Net in the shallow estuaries and creeks surrounding Port Albert.
  • Squid: Jigged around the pier and in Corner Inlet during the evening.
