Fishing Geraldton

Fisheries management across Geraldton strictly enforces DPIRD regulations, including West Coast Demersal Scalefish management rules and seasonal closures. Shore-based anglers remain exempt from boat closures and can legally target demersal species like Pink Snapper from outer breakwalls. Annual Baldchin Groper closures apply across the Abrolhos Islands Wilderness Zone from 1 November to 31 January to protect spawning stocks.

Land-based anglers enjoy world-class infrastructure along the Batavia Coast Marina breakwall, Francis Street Boat Ramp jetty, and Pages Beach. Casting heavy patternoster rigs or whole pilchards off Batavia Coast Marina breakwall during overcast days produces heavy Pink Snapper, Samson Fish, and giant Australian Salmon. The calm waters off Town Beach yield bucketfuls of Whiting, Silver Trevally, and Southern Calamari on light tackle.

Boating fishers launching from Batavia Coast Marina or Francis Street gain direct access to Champion Bay and deep ocean grounds. Drifting the shallow limestone reefs in 10 to 20 metres depth accounts for heavy catches of Southern Calamari, King George Whiting, and Baldchin Groper. Offshore vessels undertaking the 35-nautical-mile run to the Abrolhos Islands target trophy Coral Trout, Pink Snapper, Baldchin Groper, Samson Fish, and Spanish Mackerel.

Landbased

  • BATAVIA COAST MARINA BREAKWALL: High-capacity granite seawall protecting Batavia Coast Marina, offering deep-water access for Pink Snapper and Samson Fish. Cast long-distance patternoster rigs baited with whole squid or pilchards into ocean waters on an incoming tide. Sturdy footwear with rubber soles is mandatory when walking on large granite boulders.
  • FRANCIS STREET FORESHORE JETTY: Dual-lane concrete boat ramp facility located on Geraldton foreshore featuring a central wooden boarding jetty between the lanes. Cast fine monofilament lines with small running sinker rigs baited with fresh mussels or live herring near pylon bases. Late afternoon periods produce steady squid strikes on size 2.5 jigs.
  • PAGES BEACH FORESHORE: Sheltered sandy beach located near Point Moore lighthouse, ideal for wading anglers targeting Whiting, Tarwhine, and Flathead. Fan-cast small soft plastic grubs or baited patternoster rigs along sandbar drop-offs during early morning low-wind windows. Calm shallow waters make this an ideal spot for family fishers.
  • DRUMMOND COVE BEACH GUTTERS: Open ocean beach located 11km north of Geraldton, famous for autumn Australian Salmon and summer Tailor runs. Cast heavy 12-foot surf rods with 3-way patternoster rigs baited with fresh pilchard blocks into deep blue gutters at dusk. Always check sand height and tide levels before driving 4WD vehicles on the beach.
  • POINT MOORE GRANITE REEF: Exposed ocean headland offering high-energy casting platforms into deep water washes for big Tailor and Samson Fish. Cast 40g to 60g metal casting lures into white-water foam during early morning hours. Extreme caution is mandatory as large ocean swells wash across low reef ledges without warning.

Offshore

  • HOUTMAN ABROLHOS ISLANDS ARCHIPELAGO: World-famous coral atoll network located 35 nautical miles west of Geraldton in 10 to 50 metres depth. Premier bottom bouncing and trolling territory for trophy Coral Trout, Pink Snapper, Baldchin Groper, Samson Fish, and Spanish Mackerel. Requires a large sea-going vessel, detailed navigation planning, and strict adherence to marine park zoning.
  • CHAMPION BAY LIMESTONE REEFS: Inshore limestone reef system sitting 2 to 5 nautical miles off Geraldton in 12 to 22 metres depth. Prolific territory for setting crayfish pots for Western Rock Lobster and drifting light tackle rigs for King George Whiting and Calamari. Early morning calm weather offers optimal conditions before sea breezes set in.
  • AFRICAN REEF BOMMIES: Prominent underwater rock reef situated 8 nautical miles south of Geraldton in 18 to 28 metres depth. Vertical jigging 150g metal knife jigs or trolling minnow lures triggers explosive strikes from Samson Fish and Yellowtail Kingfish. Anchor upwind and establish a continuous berley trail to raise pelagics.
  • SEVEN MILE RIDGE: Outer limestone reef ridge running parallel to the northern coastline in 25 to 35 metres depth. Prolific territory for drifting whole squid baits for Pink Snapper and West Australian Dhufish during permitted shore-based periods or catch-and-release sessions. Monitor weather forecasts closely as sea breezes generate steep chop.
  • GREENOUGH RIVER MOUTH LEADS: Navigable river entrance sitting south of Geraldton, holding schools of Silver Trevally, Tailor, and Black Bream. Trolling micro-crankbaits or drifting live herring along channel drop-offs produces consistent action. High swell conditions require careful bar navigation.

Hot Spots

  • BATAVIA COAST MARINA: WA's premier Mid West marina delivering trophy land-based Pink Snapper, Salmon, and Calamari.
  • HOUTMAN ABROLHOS ISLANDS: World-famous coral archipelago offering bucket-list Coral Trout, Pink Snapper, and Mackerel.
  • FRANCIS STREET RAMP JETTY: Town foreshore ramp jetty famous for Silver Trevally, Herring, and night Southern Calamari.
  • PAGES BEACH: Sheltered urban beach offering top-tier light-tackle family fishing for Whiting and Tarwhine.
  • DRUMMOND COVE SURF GUTTERS: Iconic ocean beach drop-off famous for big surf Tailor, Australian Salmon, and Gummy Sharks.

Local Bait Tips

  • BLUE MUSSELS: Scraped from submerged granite boulders and timber pylons around Batavia Coast Marina and Francis Street Jetty at low tide. Dislodge clusters using a heavy putty knife and collect into a bucket lined with damp kelp. Fresh crushed mussels represent lethal bait for King George Whiting and Silver Trevally.
  • SHORE CRABS (ROCK CRABS): Collected by hand from rock crevices and granite boulders along Batavia Coast Marina breakwall at low tide. Target small shore crabs, place them in a damp bucket with wet seaweed, and keep shaded. Rigged through the outer edge of the carapace, they represent lethal live bait for Baldchin Groper.
  • LIVE HERRING & GARFISH: Caught off Francis Street Jetty and Batavia Coast Marina using light float rigs baited with small dough pieces. Transfer hooked specimens immediately into an aerated livewell for use as live bait. Rigged on snelled hooks, live Herring trigger explosive strikes from Spanish Mackerel and Samson Fish.
  • OCTOPUS & SOUTHERN CALAMARI: Targeted over shallow seagrass beds off Champion Bay using size 2.5 to 3.0 cloth-wrapped squid jigs. Cast jigs across sand-and-weed junctions on light fluorocarbon trace and retrieve with steady lifts. Live squid rigged whole on twin snelled hooks are unmatched for land-based Pink Snapper off Batavia Coast breakwall.
