Fishing Gold Coast Seaway
Tidal currents are exceptionally powerful through this system, with massive volumes of oceanic water accelerating through the narrow basalt rock walls. Seasonal shifts bring a diverse range of target species, with winter welcoming outstanding spawning runs of yellowfin bream, tailor, and schooling Mulloway, while summer brings mangrove jack, giant trevally and Spanish mackerel. Know the rules: Spanish mackerel 75cm minimum, 1 per person (or 4 per boat with 4 or more people on board), closed 1 to 21 February and 1 to 21 March. Snapper 35cm minimum, 4 per person (only 1 over 70cm), closed 15 July to 15 August. Mulloway 75cm minimum, 2 per person, and keep them whole on the boat. Understanding how to fish the tide transitions is critical, as the fast-flowing water forces baitfish out of the shallow flats into the deep channels where predators gather.
Land-based anglers can target this premier structure directly from the paved walking platforms and basalt rock walls of the Southport Spit South Wall. Casting heavy metal lures or drifting unweighted baits of pilchards from the high rock ledges during the slack water high tide produces spectacular action. Anglers must exercise extreme caution on the wet, slippery basalt rocks, especially when large ocean swells crash against the outer walls.
For boat and kayak anglers, positioning and boat control are highly technical due to the heavy shipping traffic and roaring tidal surges. Anchoring directly in the main channel is highly dangerous and not recommended; instead, boaters must utilize GPS lock electric motors or drift live baits down-current. The brief thirty-minute window of slack water high tide is the golden hour, providing the cleanest oceanic visibility and allowing light weights to reach the bottom structures.

Landbased
- The Southport Spit South Wall: This famous basalt rock wall extends directly out into the ocean, providing outstanding land-based access. Anglers walk the paved pathway and fish from the high rock ledges, casting heavy metal lures. Exercise extreme caution, as large ocean swells can crash unexpectedly over the wall, requiring high-grip footwear.
- The Sand Bypass Jetty Beach: The sandy gutters running directly adjacent to the sand-bypassing jetty are highly productive. Cast whole pilchards on ganged hooks or large chrome spoons directly into the rolling surf. Always maintain a firm footing in the loose sand, especially when large waves surge up.
- The Seaway South Wall Platform: A concrete public fishing platform located halfway down the South Wall rock structure. It provides a secure, comfortable casting platform for targeting schooling giant trevally on light spinning gear. Cast unweighted baits of local prawns tightly against the rocks, letting them sink naturally.
- South Stradbroke Island North Wall: Located on the northern side of the Seaway entrance, accessible strictly via boat. This isolated rock platform offers incredibly productive casting access to the deep ocean wash. Cast large, unweighted pilchards on ganged hooks into the deep wash to target big tailor.
- The Spit Beach Ledges: The sandy-beach gutters running directly adjacent to the southern wall inside the estuary. Wading these shallows on a rising tide while casting soft plastic grubs yields outstanding sand whiting. The area is highly protected from heavy swells, making it a comfortable family-friendly option.
Offshore
- The Seaway Entrance Bar: Cross it, don't fish it. Never troll along the pressure waves. The Gold Coast Seaway Bar is a declared coastal bar, and Maritime Safety Queensland says to avoid high standing waves. Wait for a lull, cross, and troll for Spanish mackerel once you are well clear outside. Everyone on an open boat must wear a lifejacket while crossing. That's the law. Emergency: VHF 16 or 000.
- The Seaway Deep Hole: The deep current basin dropping to eighteen meters just inside the mouth of the rock walls is a major holding ground. Boaters use GPS-lock electric trolling motors to hover over the drop-off, dropping heavy jigs. The strike is incredibly violent, requiring your drag to be locked completely to prevent the fish from reaching rocks.
- The Southport Seaway Canyon: A deep, steep-sided sandy canyon running through the center of the Seaway channel, dropping to over fifteen meters. Drifting this canyon with heavy soft plastics or live herring on running sinker rigs is productive. Watch your sounder closely for localized depressions or drop-offs, as flathead will aggregate tightly.
- The Wave Break Island Gutter: The deep, fast-flowing channel running between Wave Break Island and the pipeline entrance is a major lane. It is a highly productive drift-fishing zone for targeting trophy-class flathead on large soft plastics. Drop your jig heads to the bottom and retrieve them with a fast, erratic hopping motion.
- The North Wall Drift Line: Position your vessel forty meters up-current of the North Wall rock tip and set up a silent drift. Deploy unweighted live baits of slimy mackerel or fresh squid on snelled rigs. This is the premier tactic for targeting giant, structure-dwelling Mulloway holding in the wall's shadow.

- The South Wall Stairs: The concrete stairs on the south wall provide direct, land-based casting access to the southern end of the pipe.

- Live Herring: Cast-netted around the vertical concrete structures of the sand bypass jetty or nearby canal pontoons on a high tide. Pinned through the nose, they make an exceptional live bait for flathead and cod.
- Live Mullet: Cast-netted in the shallow, mangrove-lined channels of the lower Pimpama River or nearby canals. Pinned through the nose, they make an exceptional live bait for big flathead.
- Yabbies: Pumped using a stainless steel yabby pump from the extensive sand flats directly in front of the Southport Broadwater at low tide. They are the absolute premier live bait for sand whiting inside the canal channels.

- Naples Avenue Boat Ramp, Surfers Paradise:
Located at the Naples Avenue Reserve in Surfers Paradise, this single-lane concrete ramp is highly tide-dependent. Extremely strong tidal currents flow parallel to the bank. Features include 30 car-trailer unit (CTU) parking spaces and a large rigging area, but the ramp has no floating pontoon and reversing can be highly technical.
- Oxley Drive Boat Ramp, Jabiru Island:

- Carrara Road Boat Ramp, Carrara:
Located at Carrara Road in Carrara, this concrete ramp is a mid-river active launch. It features barely any dedicated parking bays, making it near impossible to swing a trailer around, and has a rocky shoreline instead of a sandy beach.
