Fishing Penneshaw
The marine ecosystem is driven by ferocious tidal currents flushing through Backstairs Passage, carrying rich bait schools between Gulf St Vincent and the Southern Ocean. Summer and autumn bring an influx of Yellowtail Kingfish, Samson Fish, Southern Calamari, Sand Flathead, and Silver Trevally. Note that Southern Calamari is open year-round in Kangaroo Island waters, while Snapper is subject to a seasonal spawning closure from midday November 1 to midday December 15.
Land-based fishers can work Penneshaw Jetty, Christmas Cove marina breakwalls, and Hog Bay foreshore. Casting size 3.0 squid jigs off the jetty end yields limit bags of Southern Calamari. Soaking whole pilchards or live mullet on heavy bottom setups targets roaming Yellowtail Kingfish and nocturnal Gummy Sharks.
Boaters launching from Penneshaw Boat Ramp at Christmas Cove enjoy safe all-weather access protected by a breakwater. Trolling large skirted lures or slow-boating live baits around Backstairs Passage reefs targets trophy Yellowtail Kingfish and Samson Fish. Heading out to the 20 to 50-meter deep marks off Cape Willoughby yields heavy Nannygai, Striped Trumpeter, and Gummy Sharks.

- COCKLES (PIPIS): Gathered along sandy intertidal wash zones on Hog Bay Beach at low tide by foot-twisting in wet sand. Thread two whole cockles onto long-shank hooks for King George Whiting and Sand Flathead.
- GHOST SHRIMP (PINK NIPPERS): Pumped using a stainless steel yabbie pump on exposed low-tide sandflats inside Hog Bay. Keep alive on damp sea-sponge in a cool shade box as top bait for King George Whiting.

Penneshaw Boat Ramp is located off North Terrace inside Christmas Cove Marina at Penneshaw, managed by Kangaroo Island Council. The facility features a concrete launching ramp equipped with a boarding pontoon inside a fully sheltered rock breakwater basin, providing safe all-weather access to Backstairs Passage. Note that there are no public restrooms, power, or fuel facilities directly at the ramp slab; amenities include paved trailer parking and nearby ferry terminal services.
