Fishing Sandgate & Nudgee Beach
Tidal flows are extremely strong through the passage channels, pushing clean oceanic water past the Shorncliffe pier and flooding the expansive upstream sand flats. Seasonal shifts bring a diverse range of target species, with winter welcoming outstanding yellowfin bream, tailor, and schooling snapper, while summer triggers explosive mangrove jack, giant trevally, and sand whiting action. Flathead remain highly consistent year-round residents, shifting their feeding positions along the shallow drop-offs in response to the changing lunar cycles.
Land-based anglers are incredibly well catered for with extensive parklands, boardwalks, and public fishing platforms along Shorncliffe and Sandgate. Wading the shallow flats surrounding Sandgate on a falling tide is a highly productive way to target trophy whiting and flathead on light tackle. Anglers must exercise extreme caution when wading near the main channels, as deep drop-offs and fast-flowing currents can easily sweep a footing away.
For boat and kayak anglers, the deep current lanes, bridge pylons, and rocky revetment walls provide endless tactical options. Navigating the canal entrances and current seams requires a high-quality fishfinder to locate the baitfish schools pushed up against the stone structures. The deep-water junctions drop to over ten meters, holding schooling Mulloway that feed aggressively during the brief slack water high tide window.

Landbased
- Shorncliffe Pier: Cast unweighted live yabbies on a size four long-shank hook directly into the tidal currents at the end of the three-hundred-and-fifty-meter timber structure. Retrieve with a slow, continuous twitch to target sand whiting feeding along the sandy drop-offs. Use a three-kilogram fluorocarbon leader to maximize your bite rate in the clear water.
- Cabbage Tree Creek Wall: Slowly roll three-inch soft plastic paddle tails on light five-gram jig heads along the basalt rock wall. Let the jig head bump the bottom to kick up visual puffs of silt. Focus your casts around the isolated weed clumps where flathead wait in ambush.
- Nudgee Beach Gutters: Wade the shallow sandy flats on a rising tide. Walk quietly so you don't spook the fish, and cast live yabbies on light fluorocarbon leaders. Focus on the small channels where the current speeds up. Zone check: Nudgee Creek, and the shore and flats north-west of the creek mouth, are a green zone (no fishing or bait netting). The beach south-east of the creek mouth, toward the Kedron Brook Floodway ramp, is a habitat protection zone, where line fishing and cast netting are allowed. - Shorncliffe Rocks: Cast fresh mullet strips on a light running sinker rig parallel to the rock transitions during high water. Let the bait drift naturally with the run-in current to target quality yellowfin bream. Focus your casts during the twilight periods of dawn and dusk when baitfish concentrate.
- Kedron Brook flats: Fan-cast small surface walking lures across the shallow weed beds on a rising tide. Work the lure with a fast dog-walking retrieve to trigger surface strikes from sand whiting. Walk slowly to avoid spooking active feeding schools in the shallows.
Offshore
- The Pier Gutter: Position your boat up-current of the deep current lane running parallel to the pier structure and set up a slow drift. Deploy live herring on light running sinker rigs close to the bottom sandy transition. Keep your reel in free-spool with your finger on the line to detect flathead taps.
- Cabbage Tree Creek Mouth: Position your boat up-current of the deep muddy channel junction and use a GPS-lock motor to hover. Deploy live poddy mullet on heavy running sinker rigs using a size four-zero circle hook. Target the brief thirty-minute window of slack water high tide for Mulloway.
- Bramble Bay Ledges: Check your mark first. Green zone warning: a big block in the middle of Bramble Bay (MNP13) is closed to all fishing. It runs from 500 m off the Brighton, Sandgate and Shorncliffe shore out to about 153°06.4′E, between 27°16.97′S and 27°20.57′S. You can fish the 500 m strip along the shore (yellow zone: 2 rods and 2 hooks each) and the open bay east of the green zone. Check the Qld Marine Parks app. Only drift here if your mark is outside the green zone. Then drift the rubble and weed beds with soft plastics on light jig heads for snapper, using light fluorocarbon leaders.
- Kedron Brook Mouth: Anchor your vessel just outside the main current run and cast weighted squid baits down-current. Use a heavy ninety-gram pyramid sinker to keep the bait pinned securely along the muddy channel floor. Focus your fishing during the twilight periods of dawn and dusk.
- Shorncliffe Deep Gutter: Slowly troll deep-diving hardbody minnow lures parallel to the channel edges at three knots. Select lures that dive to three meters to bounce along the muddy bottom transition. This is a highly effective tactic for targeting active summer flathead.

Local Bait Tips
- Yabbies: Pumped using a stainless steel yabby pump on the intertidal sand and mud flats running parallel to the Shorncliffe foreshore at low tide. Hook them through the tail and up the body for sand whiting.
- Poddy Mullet: Cast-netted along the shallow sandy edges of Nudgee Beach, south-east of the Nudgee Creek mouth, on a rising tide. Don't net in Nudgee Creek or north-west of the creek mouth: that is a green zone. Keep these hardy live baits in an aerated tank to target flathead.
- Live Herring: Cast-netted around the vertical concrete structures of the pier pylons on high tide. Pin them through the nose to keep them swimming naturally in the current.
Boat Ramps
- Nudgee Road Boat Ramp, Nudgee Beach:
Located at Nudgee Rd in Nudgee Beach, this four-lane concrete ramp is accessible on the upper half of the tide only due to an extensive shallow mudflat system that requires significant motor trim to prevent grounding at low tide.
