Fishing St Kilda

Fishing success in St Kilda is influenced by seasonal changes, tides, and wind conditions. Snapper season typically peaks in spring and early summer. High tides often improve fishing activity around piers and estuaries. Westerly winds can create rough conditions offshore, while calmer days are ideal for boating.

The St Kilda area features a mix of sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, and urban infrastructure. Piers and jetties provide easy access to deeper waters, while the nearby Elwood Canal offers opportunities for estuary fishing. Be mindful of parking restrictions and designated fishing zones.

Boat access to Port Phillip Bay is readily available from St Kilda. Several boat ramps are located nearby, offering convenient launching points for exploring offshore fishing grounds. Kayaks and smaller boats can be launched from beaches, providing access to inshore areas.

Landbased

  • St Kilda Pier: Fish from the pier for Snapper, Whiting, and Squid. The end of the pier offers deeper water access.
  • Princes Pier, Port Melbourne: A historic pier offering good fishing for Snapper, Garfish and Whiting. Popular spot, so arrive early.
  • Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park: This pier is known for producing Whiting, especially during the warmer months. A great family-friendly spot.
  • Elwood Canal: Fish the mouth of the canal for Mullet, Bream, and Flathead. Use light tackle and small baits.
  • Brighton Pier: A bit further south, Brighton Pier offers a good chance at Snapper, Whiting and Squid. Can get crowded.
  • Sandridge Beach, Port Melbourne: Fish off the beach for Flathead and Whiting, particularly on an incoming tide.
  • Port Melbourne Breakwall: Cast from the breakwall for Snapper and Gummy Sharks. Best fished at night.

Offshore

  • Reefs (5-10km offshore): Target Snapper, Gummy Sharks, and Kingfish around the reefs using baited rigs and lures.
  • (15-20km offshore): Troll for Kingfish and Bonito along the channel markers. Use diving lures and skirted trolling lures.
  • (8-12km offshore): Fish for Snapper and Whiting in the deeper waters of the boat channel. Use GPS to locate productive spots.
  • Bank (20-25km offshore): A popular spot for Snapper and Gummy Sharks. Anchor and berley to attract fish.
  • Mornington Peninsula artificial reefs (approx. 10km offshore): Several artificial reefs provide habitat for Snapper, Kingfish and other species. Check charts for locations.

Local Bait Tips

  • Yabbies: Pump at Altona Beach at low tide.
  • Prawns: Net at Patterson River during summer.
  • Squid: Jig at St Kilda Pier at night.
