Fishing Wallaroo & Moonta Bay

The regional marine environment is driven by warm gulf waters flushing over extensive sandflats and ribbon weed meadows. Spring and summer bring non-stop action for Blue Swimmer Crabs, King George Whiting, Southern Calamari, and Garfish inside Moonta Bay. Deep offshore gravel bars produce heavy yields of Snapper, Samson Fish, and large Gummy Sharks.

Land-based fishers can work the historic Wallaroo Jetty, Port Hughes Jetty, and Moonta Bay Jetty. Casting size 3.0 squid jigs in natural cloth patterns off the jetty ends at high tide produces limit bags of Southern Calamari. Floating small earthworms or maggots under a pencil float near pylon structures yields dense schools of Garfish and Tommy Ruff.

Boaters launching from Wallaroo Boat Ramp or Port Hughes Boat Ramp enjoy world-class facilities with floating pontoons. Trolling shallow-diving minnow lures along the weed margins of Point Hughes targets Australian Salmon, Snook, and King George Whiting. Heading out to the 10 to 20-meter depth lines off Wallaroo Shoals allows boaters to drift over open sand for Sand Flathead and Gummy Sharks.

Landbased

  • WALLAROO JETTY: Massive timber and concrete industrial jetty extending into deep water in Spencer Gulf. Cast size 3.0 or 3.5 squid jigs along dark weed margins under night lights for giant Southern Calamari. Dropping light patternoster rigs baited with peeled prawns beside pylons pulls Tommy Ruff, Garfish, and King George Whiting.
  • PORT HUGHES JETTY: Historic timber jetty sitting over crystal-clear water and ribbon weed patches. Cast light running sinker rigs baited with fresh ghost shrimp or cockles out past the rock line for King George Whiting. Early morning light windows before swimming crowds arrive deliver active rises.
  • MOONTA BAY JETTY: L-shaped timber jetty extending over shallow sand flats and weed gaps. Suspending maggots or cockles under a pencil float during calm morning conditions attracts dense schools of Garfish. Drop crab net hoops baited with fish frames in clear sand channels for Blue Swimmer Crabs during summer.
  • OFFICE BEACH FORESHORE: Wide sandy beach in central Wallaroo featuring clear sand gaps and gentle drop-offs. Wader fishers cast fresh sand worms or pipis on light 4lb leader setups into sandy gutters for King George Whiting. Late afternoon high tides yield consistent catches.
  • NORTH POINT ROCK LEDGES: Low granite rock ledges north of Wallaroo offering deep casting into upper Spencer Gulf currents. Cast 28g to 40g metal spinners or white soft plastics far out into wave wash for schooling Australian Salmon. Wear non-slip footwear and monitor swell sets carefully.

Offshore

  • WALLAROO SHOALS: Extensive submerged reef and gravel bar system sitting in 10 to 18 meters depth off Wallaroo. Drift across clear sand gaps casting soft plastics or bottom-bouncing fresh squid strips for King George Whiting and Sand Flathead. Using a sea anchor slows your drift speed through the tide.
  • PORT HUGHES WEED MEADOWS: Wide shallow basin holding dense submerged ribbon weed in 3 to 8 meters depth. Drift across clear weed pockets casting size 3.0 squid jigs or light whiting rigs for Southern Calamari and King George Whiting. Clear water days with light winds deliver ideal sight-casting conditions.
  • COPPER COAST CRAB FLATS: Vast shallow mud and sand flats sitting in 2 to 6 meters depth across Moonta Bay. Drop crab net hoops baited with fish frames in clear sand channels for Blue Swimmer Crabs during summer. The clear water over sand gaps also yields consistent Sand Flathead.
  • NORTH GULF DEEP DROP-OFF: Deep shipping channel reaching 15 to 25 meters depth out in Spencer Gulf. Set heavy anchors on the channel slope at night with fresh fish fillets or whole squid heads for large Gummy Sharks. Heavy running sinker rigs are required to keep baits stationary against strong gulf currents.
  • POINT HUGHES REEF MARGINS: Submerged granite rock and kelp reef sitting near the point in 5 to 12 meters depth. Troll 90mm shallow-diving minnow lures at slow idle speed along channel edges for Australian Salmon and Snook. Watch tidal current seams closely as fish gather to feed.

Hot Spots

  • Wallaroo Jetty: Iconic land-based timber platform offering premier casting for giant Calamari, Garfish, and Whiting.
  • Port Hughes Jetty: World-famous clear-water jetty holding high concentrations of King George Whiting and Squid.
  • Moonta Bay Crab Flats: Vast shallow sandbar basin famous across SA for producing limit bags of Blue Swimmer Crabs.
  • Wallaroo Shoals: Deep offshore gravel reef yielding limits of King George Whiting and Sand Flathead.
  • Port Hughes Boat Ramp: Premier 6-lane facility accessing deep Spencer Gulf fishing grounds.

Local Bait Tips

  • BLUE SWIMMER CRABS: Harvested using legal open-top crab drop nets baited with fish frames in Moonta Bay sand channels during summer months.
  • GHOST SHRIMP (PINK NIPPERS): Pumped using a stainless steel yabbie pump on exposed low-tide sandflats inside Moonta Bay. Keep alive on damp sea-sponge in a cool shade box as top bait for King George Whiting.
  • SOUTHERN CALAMARI: Caught off Wallaroo Jetty or over Port Hughes weed beds using size 3.0 squid jigs. Slice fresh tubes into thin fluttering strips for Flathead bait or use whole heads for offshore Gummy Sharks.
  • COCKLES (PIPIS): Gathered along sandy intertidal wash zones on ocean beaches at low tide by foot-twisting in wet sand. Thread two whole cockles onto long-shank hooks for King George Whiting and Sand Flathead.
