Fishing Lake Tuggeranong

Fishing success at Lake Tuggeranong is influenced by seasonal changes. Spring and autumn generally offer the most productive fishing periods as water temperatures are moderate, encouraging fish activity. Wind direction and intensity can affect shoreline access and fish distribution; calmer conditions are typically preferred. Rainfall can impact water clarity and flow rates, potentially influencing fish behavior.

The lake is surrounded by parkland and walking trails, providing easy access to various fishing locations along the shoreline. The terrain is generally flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for anglers of all ages and abilities. The urban setting means that amenities such as parking, restrooms, and picnic areas are readily available.

Shoreline access is excellent around most of Lake Tuggeranong. There are designated fishing platforms and numerous spots along the bank suitable for casting. While boating is permitted, it's primarily for non-powered vessels like kayaks and canoes, limiting offshore fishing to smaller craft. A boat ramp is located on the western side of the lake, providing convenient entry.

Landbased

  • Lake Tuggeranong Park: Offers easily accessible fishing spots along the shoreline with well-maintained paths.
  • Gungahlin Drive Pond: A smaller, quieter pond connected to the lake, ideal for targeting Redfin.
  • Point Hut Crossing: Located at the southern end of the lake, providing deeper water access from the bank.
  • Isabella Plains: The Western shore provides deeper water and access to submerged structures which may hold fish.
  • Near the Tuggeranong Arts Centre: Offers fishing spots close to local amenities and shade.

Offshore

  • Central Lake Area: The deeper sections hold good numbers of Murray Cod and Golden Perch, especially during warmer months.
  • Western Bays: Target these areas for Redfin, particularly around submerged weed beds.
  • Southern End Near Point Hut Crossing: This area often holds larger fish moving between the lake and the Tuggeranong Creek inlet.
  • Eastern Shoreline Drop-offs: Focus on the areas where the lakebed slopes down quickly, as these tend to concentrate fish.
  • Around the Central Island: Cast around the submerged structure for Murray Cod.

Local Bait Tips

  • Redclaw: Use opera house traps baited with vegetable scraps or pet food and set overnight near submerged logs.
  • Shrimp: Set shrimp traps baited with bread or fish scraps along the weedy edges of the lake.
  • Worms: Dig for worms in damp soil around the lake's perimeter, particularly after rainfall.
