Fishing Warneet / Blind Bight
Fishing this region relies on understanding how fish migrate up the inlets as incoming tides cover the expansive mudflats. Boat Ramps
- Warneet South Boat Ramp:
Warneet South Boat Ramp is located on Rutherford Parade within the Warneet Foreshore Reserve, providing access to Rutherford Inlet. Managed by the Warneet Foreshore Reserve Committee of Management, this concrete ramp is currently a multi-lane facility, with detailed plans underway to expand it to a three-lane configuration and construct a formalised overflow parking layout. The ramp is serviced by on-water staging pontoons and is situated adjacent to the Warneet South Jetty, which features a lower landing on its north-western side set aside for short-term loading and unloading up to four hours. Boaters must contend with extreme tidal currents frequently exceeding 5 knots within the narrow channel. Additionally, extensive mud accumulation at the water’s edge before and after high tide can make boarding and retrieval highly slippery and hazardous.
- Blind Bight Boat Ramp:
Located on the southeast-facing shoreline of Western Port within the residential township of Blind Bight, this local facility accesses the shallow waters of the bay. The ramp infrastructure consists of two narrow concrete launching lanes (3.3 and 3.4 meters wide) featuring an angled plank type surface. Docking and boarding are supported by a newly installed floating pontoon and a nearby fishing platform. The primary hazard is the extensive shallowness; during low tide, water recedes hundreds of meters, exposing vast mudflats.
- Tooradin Boat Ramp:
Located in the Tooradin Foreshore Reserve off the South Gippsland Highway, this facility provides direct launching access into Sawtells Inlet. The ramp infrastructure consists of a three-lane concrete ramp constructed with a herringbone surface pattern to provide enhanced vehicle traction, capable of launching boats up to 8 metres in length. For staging and boarding, the site features two floating pontoons alongside the adjacent Tooradin Jetty. Navigational and tidal hazards are significant; Sawtells Inlet is extremely shallow and highly tide-dependent, making the ramp short and historically prone to low-tide shoaling where launching vehicles risk backing off the physical end of the concrete slab into a steep underwater drop-off.
