Fishing Queenscliff
The massive volume of water flushing through the entrance creates deep channels, jagged limestone reefs, and rich feeding zones. Summer brings fast-paced action for Yellowtail Kingfish, big Gummy Sharks, and jumbo Southern Calamari. Winter turns the focus toward schooling Australian Salmon, Silver Trevally, and Barracouta inside the harbor cuts.
Land-based anglers face heavy currents but enjoy incredible access along pier structures, harbor walls, and deep cuts. Queenscliff Cut is famous for producing wild salmon bust-ups on incoming tides. Pier fishers targeting the deep harbor pylons pull trophy Silver Trevally, Whiting, and big squid with heavy terminal tackle.
Boaters launching from Queenscliff get immediate access to both sheltered bay waters and the open ocean. Trolling live squid around the channel markers and underwater reefs yields hard-fighting Yellowtail Kingfish. Deep-water anchoring along the channel edges produces massive Gummy Sharks and Snapper for experienced skippers.

- QUEENSCLIFF CUT: A narrow concrete-lined channel where tidal water rips through at high speed. Cast heavy 40g metal slugs or 4-inch white soft plastics into the current wash during the turn of the tide for Australian Salmon and Silver Trevally. Heavy leaders are essential to prevent fish from shredding your line against the sharp concrete walls.
- QUEENSCLIFF PIER: A historic timber pier extending into deep water near the harbor entrance. Drop weighted bait-jigs or small hooks baited with raw chicken right against the pylons for jumbo Silver Trevally. Cast size 3.5 squid jigs weighted with chin sinkers to reach the bottom in the strong current for big Calamari.
- LONSDALE BIGHT FORESHORE: A sheltered bay area featuring shallow limestone reefs and kelp beds close to shore. Wader fishers cast fresh pipis or sand worms into clear sand pockets on a rising tide for trophy King George Whiting. Calm, clear days provide ideal conditions for visual sight-casting.
- TOWN PIER ROCK-WALL: Heavy rock wall surrounding the ferry terminal that offers deep casting access. Cast 3-inch soft plastics or hardbody minnows along the rock edges for Black Bream and Flathead. Fishing the slack water hour during high tide gives you the easiest fishing conditions.
- SWAN BAY ENTRANCE JETTY: Located near the shallow Swan Bay marine sanctuary exit where water flushes rich baitfish. Cast small soft plastics or live shrimps on light jigheads for Flathead and Bream. High tide is mandatory here as low tide leaves the surrounding flats exposed.

- THE RIP (PORT PHILLIP HEADS): The high-current ocean entrance featuring underwater reefs dropping down to 90 meters depth. Down-rig live squid or drop heavy 200g metal jigs over deep pinnacles for Yellowtail Kingfish. Extreme caution and advanced seamanship are required due to dangerous standing waves and heavy shipping traffic.
- LONSDALE BIGHT SQUID GROUNDS: A sheltered, shallow kelp meadow sitting in 3 to 8 meters depth inside Point Lonsdale. Drift over the dense weed beds casting size 3.0 or 3.5 squid jigs in natural cloth colours for giant Southern Calamari. This area produces some of the largest squid in Victoria during autumn and winter.
- SYMONDS CHANNEL: A deep, fast-flowing channel cutting through the southern bay sands with depths reaching 20 meters. Set heavy anchors on the channel slopes, deploy a continuous pilchard berley trail, and soak whole squid or fresh fish fillets for Gummy Sharks and School Sharks. Use 80lb leader to withstand abrasive shark skin.
- SWAN BAY OUTFLOW CHANNEL: The shallow sand channel leading out from Swan Bay into the main bay. Drift the channel edges in 3 to 6 meters depth with light whiting rigs baited with fresh pipis or squid strips for King George Whiting. The incoming tide brings clean ocean water and hungry schools of whiting.
- CORSAIR ROCK MARGINS: A dangerous shallow reef structure sitting just inside the Heads that attracts pelagic gamefish. Troll large diving minnows or slow-boat live baits around the reef edges for Yellowtail Kingfish and Australian Salmon. - LIVE GARFISH: Caught inside Queenscliff Harbour using a pencil float and tiny size 12 hooks baited with dough under a bread-crumb berley trail. Pin live through the top lip for trophy Kingfish, Mulloway, and Flathead.

- Queenscliff Boating Facility:
Queenscliff Boating Facility is located at the southern tip of the Bellarine Peninsula, providing direct access to the tidal Yarra-entrance channel, Port Phillip Heads (The Rip), and Bass Strait. The facility features three concrete launching lanes and multiple floating pontoons (including a central floating pontoon) that provide doubled vessel tie-up space. Boaters face extreme tidal currents and hazardous waters near Port Phillip Heads, and maintenance requires dredging approximately 3,200 cubic meters of silty sand from the ramp basin to maintain all-tide navigational access. Amenities include 89 marked car-and-trailer bays utilizing 1,400 square meters of HydroSTON H80 permeable concrete pavers (Cargo color) to filter urban runoff, an updated lane system, public toilets, a dedicated kayak launching ramp, and a Boating Vic live webcam.
